Pennywise Pompoms – The Natural Starting Point

In order to make the eye hurting orange pompoms on the front of Pennywise’s yellow jumper, I used two balls of Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Flame M:4440. (Pompoms take an inordinate amount of yarn [and time] to make)

Next, I traced 8 circles the diameter I wanted the finished pompom to be.

I then traced another circle in the centre of the existing ones, making sure there was about 1.75″ ring made.

Then, I cut out the circles, and their centres, and I was left with 8 doughnut shaped cardboard circles.

I paired up the cardboard doughnuts and cut a small slit into each pair – this is where the yarn is anchored.

I began wrapping yarn around the cardboard ring so that the entire cardboard is covered, making sure to keep the yarn taught but not extremely tight. The tighter you wind the yarn, the more dense your pompom will be.

Continue winding until you can’t push the yarn through the centre anymore, then go get a dull pencil you can use to push the yarn through.

I use the pointy end to gently stuff the yarn through until I can grab it with my fingers.

When I couldn’t push anymore yarn though, I began cutting around the perimeter of the yarn doughnut until the cardboard circles were exposed.

When I was able to separate the two cardboard circles with my fingers, I tied a piece of doubled over yarn in the same colour between the cardboard circles and pulled it as tight as I could, using a double knot.

After the yarn was tightly tied, I then gently ripped the hardboard circles out of the centre, and trimmed the pompom into a round shape (it will be a bit egg-shaped when you first tear out the cardboard – don’t worry, just trim it up)

Once I was happy with the shape, I trimmed the last long bit of yarn that was the centre tie.

I now have a pompom! Only two more to go for iFantastic’s Pennywise cosplay!

How do you make pompoms? Fancy trying your had at some?

*The pictures with the purple yarn are from a pompom that I made for my kitten – he was getting into my orange pompoms so I thought I’d just suck it up and make him his own. Now, he ignores it. Typical. lol
